Life lessons with Lily: Self-worth

I love seeing the parallels of parenting and coaching. I want to take you back to last month when North Carolina got hit with a foot of snow! Lily and I decided to go for a walk before lunch. It was sunny and we wanted some fresh air so we set out and I let Lily pick our route. She wanted to do the circle outside our neighborhood that was going to be longer… I asked are you sure about the longer walk and she said Yes!!!

I took this picture of her below because I wanted to remember what she said next… About 10 minutes in she said “Mommy I’m getting tired” and I reminded her she picked the way she wanted to go. Then I heard her say to herself, “You got this Lily!!!” It was precious and I told her we can do anything, we are strong and it’s one step at a time! She said “I lied to myself cause this is hard.” I explained that she just has to follow through with her decisions and prove to herself what she’s capable of. We started walking again and she said, “We can do this mommy!” We sure did. One step at a time we finished our walk and Lily proved to herself that she’s strong and capable!! Made my heart burst getting to see her finish and learn a valuable lesson 🙂

Here’s the parallel I see with my clients. Often clients have let themselves down SO many times they don’t know what it means to trust themself and follow through… they have broken their own trust and have such low self-worth as a result. Working together—with time, new skills and developing new habits—they are able to rebuild and heal their self-worth!! What a beautiful process to walk through as a parent and coach: building {or rebuilding} self-worth!
