From caterpillar to butterfly: the beauty of true transformation

Over Spring Break we saw a caterpillar crawling around in the condo we were staying at and it got me thinking about Transformation. I immediately saw a yucky insect while my sweet daughter saw a beautiful butterfly and begged me to put it outside. That night I couldn’t stop thinking about the process a caterpillar must go through to become a new creation – a breathtaking butterfly!

We love the idea of becoming something new—healthier, stronger, more confident, more at peace. But real transformation isn’t instant, and it’s rarely comfortable.

A caterpillar doesn’t simply grow wings one day and take off.

It enters the chrysalis… and everything changes.

Inside that small, hidden space, the caterpillar doesn’t just improve—it completely breaks down before being rebuilt into something entirely new. It’s a process that looks like stillness from the outside, but inside, deep transformation is happening.

That’s exactly how growth often works in our own lives.

There are seasons where it feels like nothing is happening. Progress seems slow. Old habits are being challenged. You may even feel like you’re “falling apart” a bit.

But what if that’s not failure?

What if that’s transformation?

The Bible reminds us in Romans 12:2:
“Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Notice—it doesn’t say “improve” or “adjust.”

It says be transformed. Metamorphosis. A change on the outside that comes from the inside.

Just like the caterpillar, real change starts on the inside. It’s not just about what we do—it’s about how we think, what we believe, and who we are becoming.

And transformation takes time.

In a world that pushes quick fixes—fast results, instant gratification, overnight success—God’s process often looks slower… but it is deeper and lasting.

If you’re in a season that feels quiet, uncomfortable, or uncertain, don’t rush it.

Growth is happening.

God is working—even when you can’t see it yet.

And just like the butterfly, when the process is complete, you won’t just be a “better version” of who you were…

You’ll be made new!!

When your identity shifts, your habits follow.

And that’s when transformation actually lasts!
